CHICAGO, IL - March 3, 2004 - Korea Electric Power Data Network Co., Ltd. (KDN) has been making important advances within the Korean market. KDN, a Korean-based solutions provider and systems integrator, has been an InStep partner since May 2003 and since that time has been bringing InStep technology to various enterprises within the power utilities industry in Korea .
Examples of KDN's success include Korean Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) and Korean Energy Management Company (KEMCO). Both companies purchased eDNA, InStep Software's leading real-time data historian.
KHNP split off from KEPCO along with other five thermal power generation companies on April 2, 2001 . KHNP is the largest generation company in Korea and operates 29.2% of the nation's power generation facilities. KHNP also generates the world's fifth-largest nuclear power output and operates at a higher capacity than any other nuclear power company.
KHNP launched a real-time metering system project and eDNA is being used for meter data monitoring and as a real-time data historian. eDNA collects 28 types of data such as kW, kWh, kVAR, and PFSIGN from each meter and provides various functions such as metering, real-time reporting, and analysis.
Mr. Bong-Kyoon Kim from KDN said "eDNA provides every function which KHNP wants in a real-time metering system. It is almost certain that the rest of the five generation companies will ask for the system in the near future, because KDN as well as KHNP are fully satisfied with eDNA both technically and commercially."
eDNA is also the solution KEMCO decided to implement. Founded in 1980 by the Rational Energy Utilization Act, KEMCO's major role is to implement a rational energy conservation program by placing a high priority on efficiency. KEMCO also provides energy audits & surveys services, R&D on energy related technologies, and climate change mitigation efforts.
KEMCO recently purchased a Direct Load Control System (DLC) from KDN, which is a demand-response program designed to conserve energy when demand for electric power is high. DLC - an electric load curtailment program - is a two-way interaction control system between KEMCO and customers. As KEMCO notices an increase in demand or a decrease in reserves, customers who have signed DLC contracts receive instructions to curtail power. If they follow instructions, they receive remuneration. Ongoing noncompliance with instructions results in fines.
eDNA monitors customers' demand trends and stores past actions regarding compliance with KEMCO instructions. eDNA monitors and archives duration of curtailment, amount curtailed, quality of power, regional power demand-supply situation, and impact - on a per customer basis. When a customer does not comply with KEMCO instructions, the data stored in eDNA can be used as proof of noncompliance, as well as proof of need for power curtailment. Dr. Son, General Manager in KEMCO, said "Load profiles of customers are necessary to study each industry's characteristics and essential to know how to apply the DLC program. eDNA allows us to do that and to get even more information, such as regional load status."
KDN and InStep Software are both excited about these recent purchases and eager to continue promoting this innovative solution to other companies. InStep President John Kalanik states, "Our relationship with KDN has allowed us to increase our presence in the international market. We look forward to the continued growth of eDNA in Korea and we are confident that KDN will play a key role in our success."
